More than six months after they were kidnapped by terrorists, at least 176 residents of Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have been freed.
The Kwara State Government announced the development on Wednesday in a post on its official Facebook page.
The post read: “Alhamdulillah and kudos to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, security forces, and everyone who played a role in this huge feat. We are grateful!”
The victims, most of them women and children, were kidnapped by armed bandits during the February 3, 2026, attack on the two communities.
Speaking to The Telegraph, the Commissioner for Communications, Bola Olukoju, thanked President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian military, and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for their efforts in securing the victims’ release.
Olukoju said the rescue followed sustained behind-the-scenes efforts by security agencies and the state government. She added that although the victims had been freed, the government was still awaiting a comprehensive briefing from the military, which currently has them in custody, before confirming the final number released.
“Yes, our Woro victims have been released. We are still awaiting more details from the military, but first and foremost, we would like to say a big thank you to the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian military, and our governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who hasn’t rested since it happened,” she said.
“He has remained fully engaged throughout the process. People often ask what the governor has been doing, but because it was a security matter, we could not disclose the steps being taken behind the scenes.
“To God be the glory, they have been released. We are expecting more details from the military.”
