Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is set to leave the club with immediate effect following talks with the club’s hierarchy, according to a BBC Sport report on Thursday.
Sources said the 48-year-old had been reflecting on his future at St James’ Park in recent weeks, with discussions culminating in a decision for him to step down.
Howe’s position came under scrutiny after Newcastle endured a disappointing Premier League campaign last season, finishing 12th after losing 17 of their 38 matches.
His final game in charge is expected to be Wednesday’s 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City.
Reports suggest Howe was taken aback by Newcastle’s transfer dealings this summer, although he understood the club’s need to balance its finances through player sales.
While he had decided earlier this year to remain at the club despite the prospect of key departures, his stance reportedly shifted during the transfer window.
Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson had insisted in March that the club was not considering a managerial change “at the moment”.
Howe’s frustration is also said to have grown following the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool, despite Newcastle spending about £240m on new signings just a year earlier.
The Magpies have also seen midfielder Sandro Tonali join Tottenham and winger Anthony Gordon complete a move to Barcelona, while Arsenal remain interested in captain Bruno Guimaraes.
Howe succeeded Steve Bruce in November 2021 and oversaw one of the club’s most successful periods in recent history.
He guided Newcastle to the 2025 Carabao Cup, ending the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy, and secured UEFA Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025.
Last season, Newcastle reached the Champions League round of 16 before suffering an 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona. Their Carabao Cup title defence ended in the semi-finals, while they failed to build on their fifth-place finish in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.
During his tenure, Howe recorded 84 Premier League wins, 38 draws and 57 defeats in 179 matches. His 84 league victories are the most by any Newcastle manager, while his 46.9 per cent win rate is surpassed only by Kevin Keegan.
