The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced full digital registration of births and deaths across the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State under its Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system.
The NPC Federal Commissioner representing Ebonyi State, Jeremiah Nwankwegu, announced the rollout during a press briefing in Abakaliki, the state capital.
He said the technology-driven initiative was aimed at ensuring the timely and accurate registration of every birth and death in the state, stressing that reliable civil registration was critical for generating vital statistics needed for public policy, equitable resource allocation and national development planning.
According to Nwankwegu, the E-CRVS system became fully operational on the commission’s VitalReg platform on July 1, 2026.
“This is part of our collective effort to strengthen civil registration, enhance the generation of vital statistics, and ensure that every birth and death occurring in Ebonyi State is captured through a modern, digitally enabled system,” he said.
The commissioner also announced that records of change of name through Deed Poll would now be integrated directly into the NPC’s central portal and social registry.
He explained that the digital upgrade was introduced to streamline the registration process in line with recent legal precedents governing name changes.
Under the new framework, applicants seeking a change of name will be required to submit a valid affidavit, proof of newspaper publication and a certified Deed Poll executed by a legal practitioner.
Meanwhile, the commission has also flagged off activities to mark the 2026 World Population Day in Ebonyi State.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Realising the hopes and aspirations of young people, today and for the future,” Nwankwegu said the future of any nation depends not only on the size of its population but also on the opportunities available to its citizens.
“This year’s theme challenges us to evaluate whether our public policies and strategic investments are truly responding to the realities and aspirations of our young people,” he said.
He commended the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and other development partners for their continued support in advancing population and development initiatives in Ebonyi State.
Nwankwegu also called for the speedy review of the National Youth Policy, which he said is currently undergoing its final stakeholder review.
