The Anambra State Police Command has secured the remand of a couple, Chukwudi Chukwuyere (40) and his wife, Chisom Chukwuyere (30), over their alleged involvement in the abuse of a 10-year-old boy in their care.
The victim, identified as Chiziterem, had earlier appeared in a viral video showing severe scald injuries across his body, allegedly inflicted by his guardians in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The boy is currently receiving medical treatment under state protection.
The disturbing footage, which circulated on social media days ago, triggered widespread public outrage and prompted the intervention of the state government and security agencies.
In a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspects were arraigned in court following the conclusion of preliminary investigations.
“The Anambra State Police Command has secured the remand of Mr Chukwudi Chukwuyere (40) and Mrs Chisom Chukwuyere (30) in a correctional centre over their alleged involvement in the abuse of a 10-year-old boy in Isiowulu, Anambra State,” Ikenga said.
He added that the suspects were arraigned after preliminary investigations into the case, which gained public attention following reports and video evidence shared on social media.
Ikenga commended residents of the area for their vigilance and timely information, which led to the rescue of the child and the arrest of the suspects.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring justice and the protection of human rights in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police,” he said.
He added that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State First Lady, Nonye Soludo, has expressed satisfaction with the recovery of the child, following a second visit to him in hospital.
She said the boy’s improving condition reflected the dedication of medical personnel as well as the support and prayers received from members of the public.
Soludo commended the healthcare team for their efforts and expressed relief over the child’s steady recovery.
