Poland fought back to snatch a dramatic late draw against Nigeria in an international friendly on Wednesday.
The Super Eagles appeared destined for victory at the PGE Narodowy in Warsaw before Przemysław Wiśniewski struck with virtually the last kick of the match to earn the hosts a 2-2 draw.
Eric Chelle’s men opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Terem Moffi, who finished off a well-worked move to put Nigeria ahead.
However, Poland responded just before the break as Kacper Potulski found the equaliser to ensure the sides went into half-time level.
Nigeria made several changes at the start of the second half, with Philip Otele replacing Sevilla forward Akor Adams and Semi Ajayi coming on for Emmanuel Fernandez in the 46th minute.
Bruno Onyemaechi also replaced Zaidu Sanusi, while Paul Onuachu came on for Moffi. In defence, Calvin Bassey took the place of Igoh Ogbu.
The three-time African champions continued to press for a winner and were rewarded when Onuachu calmly converted from the penalty spot to restore Nigeria’s lead.
Nigeria looked set to secure victory over the European side, but their hopes were dashed deep into stoppage time when Wiśniewski fired home in the fifth minute of added time to ensure the spoils were shared.
The result brought back memories of the teams’ previous meeting in March 2018, when the Super Eagles claimed a 1-0 victory over Poland in a World Cup warm-up match.
Former Chelsea winger Victor Moses scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after being brought down by a Polish defender.
Following Wednesday’s encounter, Nigeria will turn their attention to another friendly against World Cup-bound Portugal on June 10.
Although the Super Eagles will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the friendly fixtures provide Chelle with an opportunity to assess new players and fine-tune his tactics ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
