Lionel Messi delivered another masterclass on Wednesday, scoring twice and helping create two more goals as Inter Miami came from behind to beat FC Cincinnati 5-3 in a thrilling MLS encounter.

With the World Cup in North America now less than a month away, the Argentina captain continues to show sparkling form.

Messi has now scored 11 goals in 12 MLS appearances this season, with Miami’s latest victory lifting them to second place in the Eastern Conference on 25 points.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner opened the scoring in the 24th minute after capitalising on a poor clearance from Matt Miazga, the ball rebounding kindly into his path.

Cincinnati levelled just before half-time when Kevin Denkey converted from the penalty spot in the 41st minute, before Pavel Bucha gave the hosts a 2-1 lead shortly after the restart with a close-range finish.

Messi responded in trademark fashion in the 55th minute, capping a slick Inter Miami move by firing home with his left foot after a Rodrigo De Paul cross.

However, Cincinnati regained the lead again nine minutes later as Brazilian playmaker Evander unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area for his seventh goal in six matches.

Miami refused to fold.

Messi turned provider in the 79th minute, setting up fellow Argentine Mateo Silvetti to bring Miami level once more, before Mexico international German Berterame struck to make it 4-3.

The Argentine superstar then sealed the victory in dramatic fashion a minute from time.

Messi launched himself at Silvetti’s cross and connected with a right-footed effort that cannoned off the post before deflecting into the net off Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano for an own goal.

Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos hailed his side’s character and attacking quality after the pulsating comeback victory.

“What they did today was brilliant, against a tough team and on a difficult pitch,” Hoyos said.

“It’s very hard to play here. It’s clear they’re not here just to stroll around MLS.

“They’re here to compete, to give everything, and to show the world that top-level football is played here too.”

He added: “We’re leaving very happy. We were able to play football at a very high level.”
