Dua Lipa sues Samsung over use of her image on TV box

Pop superstar Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, accusing the tech giant of trademark infringement and unauthorised use of her image to promote television sales in the United States.

According to court documents filed on Friday in a federal court in California, the singer alleged that Samsung used her photograph on packaging for its televisions without permission.

The lawsuit claims the company engaged in the “massive, continuing, unauthorized commercial exploitation” of Lipa’s image and likeness by displaying the photograph on cardboard television boxes.

Samsung had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing.

Included in the legal filing is an image of a Samsung high-definition television box featuring several photographs on the screen display, with a large close-up image showing part of Lipa’s face.

The photo, identified in the lawsuit as “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” is reportedly registered with the US Copyright Office and owned by the singer.

The filing also highlights Lipa’s extensive portfolio of commercial endorsements and luxury brand partnerships, including deals with Puma, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Porsche, Apple, Chanel, Nespresso, Bvlgari and Tiffany & Co..

“Ms. Lipa is highly selective in her commercial partnerships and has cultivated a premium brand through carefully curated, high-end sponsorships and endorsements,” the suit stated.

It further argued that the singer would not have approved the use of her image in connection with the sale of the allegedly infringing Samsung products.

The lawsuit lists eight civil claims, including copyright infringement, false endorsement, and violation of publicity rights.

Lipa is seeking a permanent injunction against the company, as well as damages of at least $15 million, including punitive damages.
