100-level FUTA student found dead in apartment

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has confirmed the death of one of its students, Favour Olaniyi, a 100-level undergraduate in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Akure by the Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo.

According to the statement, the student was found dead near his off-campus residence on Saturday.

Adebanjo said that upon receiving reports of the incident, the university management immediately alerted its security unit, which in turn informed the police.

“Officers from the force were dispatched to the scene, while medical officials from the university and security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue,” he said.

He added that the parents of the deceased had been formally notified.

The spokesperson confirmed that the police had commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death, while the university said it was fully cooperating with security agencies.

Adebanjo also noted that counselling support was being provided to students who may have been affected by the incident, particularly close colleagues of the deceased.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time,” he said.

He further explained that the university’s Students’ Affairs Division continues to encourage students to seek help through available counselling and support services when facing personal or academic challenges.

The institution reiterated its commitment to student welfare and mental health support across campus and off-campus environments.
