Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a N50,000 wage award for public sector workers in Lagos State.
The governor made the announcement on Friday during the International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, said the wage award will apply for the month of May as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
“For the month of May, the Lagos State Government has approved an additional N50,000 for all workers,” he said.
“We are aware of prevailing economic challenges, including rising fuel prices and global economic pressures. This decision is aimed at supporting our workforce during this period.”
He commended workers for their contributions to the development of the state, describing them as central to Lagos’ continued growth.
“Lagos is not great because of its government. It is great because of its workers — teachers, healthcare workers, artisans, and civil servants — who keep the system running,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged challenges such as housing and transportation, noting that the government is taking steps to address them.
He highlighted ongoing investments in affordable housing, saying thousands of units have already been completed, with more expected before the end of 2026.
On housing affordability, he said the state’s rent-to-own scheme requires a five per cent down payment, with flexible repayment plans designed to ease access for workers.
On transportation, he noted continued expansion of rail infrastructure aimed at improving mobility and productivity, adding that the system has already transported millions of passengers.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prompt pension payments and improved welfare for retirees.
The governor further restated his administration’s readiness to sustain dialogue with organised labour.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said a motivated workforce remains essential for effective service delivery and sustainable development.
