The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday formally declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant following the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Akpabio made the declaration during plenary, stating that the vacancy takes immediate effect in line with constitutional provisions.
He subsequently directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat, as required under the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Under constitutional procedure, the Senate is mandated to notify INEC whenever a seat becomes vacant to trigger the process for a fresh election.
Jimoh Ibrahim, who previously represented Ondo South on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), vacates the seat following his diplomatic appointment.
The development now sets the stage for a by-election in the district in the coming weeks.
