Rev. Sunday Agang, a pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Jos, and Chairman of its Board of Trustees, has regained his freedom days after he was abducted.
ECWA confirmed his release in a statement issued on Friday, expressing relief and gratitude over the development.
“We are delighted to announce, with immense gratitude and joy, the release of our dear pastor. He has regained his freedom and is currently safe,” the statement read.
The church attributed his release to divine intervention and the collective prayers of members and supporters.
“This release is a testament to God’s faithfulness and the power of collective prayer. We sincerely appreciate all brethren who stood with us in prayer during this trying period,” it added.
However, ECWA warned that the incident reflects a worsening security situation in the country, describing the rising wave of kidnappings as a serious threat.
“The growing trend of kidnapping, which has sadly become a means of livelihood for some, poses a grave threat to our collective existence and must be urgently addressed,” the statement said.
The church called on authorities at all levels of government to act decisively in tackling insecurity.
“We urge the government to rise to its primary constitutional responsibility of protecting the lives and property of every Nigerian,” it stated.
Security observers say the targeting of religious leaders underscores the increasing boldness of criminal groups and the urgent need for stronger security measures, particularly in vulnerable regions.
Despite the ordeal, ECWA reaffirmed its commitment to peace and unity in Nigeria.
“We will continue to pray for the peace of the nation and the safety of all citizens,” the church said.
Agang was abducted earlier in the week at his residence in Jos, Plateau State, an area that has witnessed a rise in attacks targeting commuters and prominent individuals.
Sources within the church said gunmen intercepted him and took him to an unknown location, sparking fear among congregants and the wider Christian community.
His abduction triggered widespread prayers and appeals for his safe return across ECWA congregations in Nigeria and abroad.
