Many feared dead as bomb explosion hits bus in Kwara

Several people are feared dead following a bomb explosion involving a commercial bus near Woro Village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The military reported that the incident occurred on Monday, 23 March 2026, at approximately 7:43 a.m., when a commercial vehicle traveling from Wurumakoto Village in Kaiama LGA to New Bussa in neighboring Niger State ran over an improvised explosive device (IED).

The driver, identified as Mallam Zunairu, was killed instantly, while several passengers sustained serious injuries. Others are feared dead. Victims with critical injuries were evacuated to the General Hospital in New Bussa for urgent medical attention.

The exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed.

Security officials suspect that armed groups operating in the area planted the device, believed to be the same perpetrators responsible for a deadly attack in the Woro axis last month.

Joint security operatives have since been deployed to the scene. During clearance operations, a second explosive device was discovered and safely defused by specialists from the Nigerian Army base in Kaiama.

Authorities noted that, despite increased security presence along the Kaiama–Woro corridor, criminal elements appear to have shifted tactics, resorting to the use of improvised explosives.

Woro Village and surrounding communities have experienced heightened insecurity in recent weeks. In February, the area witnessed a large-scale attack that left scores of residents dead and many others abducted.
