FCT polls: EFCC arrests 20 over electoral offences, recovers N17m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the arrest of 20 suspects for various electoral offences during the February 21, 2026, Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement issued by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency said the arrests were made across the FCT for offences including vote buying, vote selling, and obstruction of electoral officers. A total sum of ₦17,218,700 was recovered from the suspects.

According to the EFCC, one of the suspects was apprehended in Kwali Local Government Area with ₦13,500,000 found inside a vehicle parked near a polling unit.

The breakdown of the arrests shows that two suspects were apprehended in Abaji, nine in Gwagwalada, four in Kuje, and four in Kwali.

The commission stated that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted chairmanship and councillorship elections across the six area councils of the FCT on the same day.

In addition, by-elections were held in the Ahoada East II and Khana II state constituencies in Rivers State, as well as in the Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.
