FCT polls exposed people who buy corn from roadside sellers to deceive Nigerians – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the peaceful conduct of the FCT elections as proof of residents’ commitment to democracy and good governance.

Wike said the outcome of the polls also exposed what he called the “hypocrisy” of politicians who engage in populist gestures, such as buying corn and groundnuts from roadside vendors, in a bid to mislead Nigerians during campaigns.

“This election has shown that Nigerians now recognise the ruling party and the real opposition,” he said.

“It has further exposed the hypocrisy of those who go about buying corn and groundnuts from roadside sellers just to deceive Nigerians. Residents of the FCT have demonstrated that they cannot be misled by emergency democrats who choose not to see anything good in our country and its government.”

The minister made the remarks during a special broadcast on Sunday evening, according to a statement signed by his media aide, Lere Olayinka.

Wike commended President Bola Tinubu, describing the election as a reflection of the President’s leadership and vision.

“I thank Mr President for the development he has brought to the FCT. This election is a reflection of his vision and leadership, and a testimony that the Renewed Hope Agenda has restored optimism and confidence among residents of the FCT,” he said.

He added that Tinubu’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, particularly FCT residents, had not gone unnoticed.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda has given us hope for a brighter future, and we are confident that under his leadership, the FCT will continue to serve as a model of development and progress,” Wike stated.

The minister also praised the President for defending democracy, particularly through the amendment of the Electoral Act to strengthen the conduct of credible elections, saying it demonstrated a commitment to deepening Nigeria’s democratic process.

Wike congratulated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting what he described as a free, fair and credible election, attributing the success to strengthened democratic institutions.

He further commended security agencies for ensuring a peaceful exercise.

“Their dedication to duty contributed significantly to the success of this democratic process,” he said.

Wike urged the newly elected officials to serve with humility, dedication and excellence, and to work diligently to improve the lives of residents and drive development across communities.

He also lauded FCT residents, particularly those in satellite towns, for turning out in large numbers and conducting themselves peacefully.

“Your participation affirms your trust in our democracy. I urge you to continue supporting the government in its efforts to build a better FCT,” he said.

Wike pledged that his administration would continue to deliver the dividends of democracy in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
