FCT polls: APC wins five of six chairmanship seats

The All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed victory in five of the six chairmanship seats contested in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured the remaining seat.

Results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday revealed that the APC triumphed in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, and Kuje Area Councils. Meanwhile, the PDP emerged victorious in Gwagwalada Area Council.

In Gwagwalada, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim was declared the winner after receiving 22,165 votes, defeating APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who garnered 17,788 votes. The Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, declared, “I am the Returning Officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship election held on February 21, 2026. That Mohammed Kasim of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

The breakdown of votes in Gwagwalada was as follows:

  • PDP: 22,165
  • APC: 17,788
  • APGA: 1,687
  • ADC: 1,366

Kasim emerged victorious with the highest number of votes.

In Bwari Area Council, Joshua Ishaku of the APC secured 18,466 votes, defeating his opponents. Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen announced, “I am the Returning Officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Bwari chairmanship election held on February 21, 2026. That Joshua Ishaku, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

The results in Bwari were as follows:

  • APC: 18,466
  • ADC: 4,254
  • ZLP: 3,515

In the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected with 40,295 votes. AMAC Collation Officer Andrew Abue confirmed, “That Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

The results for AMAC showed:

  • APC: 40,295
  • ADC: 12,109
  • SDP: 2,185
  • NNPP: 1,694
  • PDP: 3,398

Maikalangu received the highest number of votes.

In Abaji Area Council, APC’s Umar Abdullahi Abubakar emerged victorious with 15,536 votes, while the PDP candidate, who received 4,547 votes, trailed behind. INEC confirmed Abubakar’s victory.

The Abaji vote breakdown was as follows:

  • APC: 15,536
  • PDP: 4,547
  • ADC: 37

Abubakar of the APC was declared the winner.

In Kwali Area Council, APC candidate Nuhu Daniel secured 17,032 votes, defeating PDP’s Haruna Pai, who earned 8,575 votes. Daniel of the APC was also returned elected.

Finally, in Kuje Area Council, APC candidate Danjuma Shekwolo won the chairmanship with 17,269 votes, securing another victory for the party.
