US actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role in the hit television series Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48 following a battle with colorectal cancer.

News of his passing was announced on Wednesday in a statement shared on his official Instagram page.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” the post read.

Van Der Beek, who was married and a father of six, revealed in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

He rose to international fame for portraying Dawson Leery, the titular character in the popular teen drama Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003 and followed a close-knit group of friends growing up in a small Massachusetts town.

Beyond television, Van Der Beek appeared in films including Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction. However, he struggled to shed the enduring association with his breakthrough role, which defined much of his public image.

Despite that, the actor expressed contentment with his career. “Overall, I’ve worn my past with pride rather than seeing it as something to get rid of,” he told celebrity news outlet Page Six in 2011.

The Instagram announcement featured a photo of Van Der Beek dressed in a white top and cardigan and was also shared by his wife, Kimberly.

“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come,” the statement continued.

“For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
