The social network X became accessible again in Venezuela on Tuesday, more than a year after it was blocked under former President Nicolás Maduro’s government, following his recent capture by US forces.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, who previously served as Maduro’s vice president and assumed leadership after his capture on January 3 updated her profile on the platform, calling for national unity and renewed focus on economic stability and social justice.
Access to the Elon Musk-owned platform remains inconsistent, after being suspended in August 2024 amid heated exchanges between Maduro and the company’s leadership over criticism of his contested re-election. Prior to the ban, X was a major outlet for Venezuelans, including government officials, lawmakers, and institutions.
Rodríguez took charge after Maduro and his wife were captured during a US military operation that reportedly left more than 100 people dead. The couple now faces US charges related to alleged drug trafficking.
Maduro’s own X account has been updated with a photo of him and his wife alongside a message saying, “We want you back,” signaling ongoing political tensions despite the platform’s return.
