The Federal High Court in Abuja is set to deliver judgment on Thursday in the alleged terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, with the ruling to be broadcast live.
The court registrar confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday morning. Cameramen from various television stations, including NTA, Channels TV, AIT, and TVC, were present in the courtroom with their equipment to transmit the proceedings live.
Justice James Omotosho had, on November 7, fixed Thursday for the judgment. The date was set after Kanu’s defence was foreclosed due to his refusal to present it under a repealed law.
The judge noted that Kanu had exhausted the six days allotted to him to conduct his defence and, by not presenting it, had effectively waived his right. Justice Omotosho added that he would have extended the period if Kanu had chosen to open his defence.
“Having failed to utilise the opportunity given to him, the defendant cannot claim to have been denied the constitutionally guaranteed right to a fair hearing,” the judge said.
