World Cup Play-Off: Super Eagles captain Ekong confirms training boycott

The captain of the Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, has confirmed that the team boycotted training on Tuesday in protest over unpaid allowances and bonuses.

The players failed to take part in their scheduled training session ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier play-off, pending the resolution of outstanding payments by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Troost-Ekong explained that the decision to skip training was a collective action aimed at drawing attention to the unpaid entitlements. He emphasized that the players had not made any new demands, but were simply asking for the settlement of what they are already owed.

“Once a resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement, claim, or supposed demand beyond what is written below is false. All we want—and continue to do—is focus on the big games ahead,” Troost-Ekong wrote.

The Super Eagles’ training camp officially opened in Rabat, Morocco, on Monday, ahead of Thursday’s CAF World Cup qualifier against Gabon.

According to the team’s official X handle, 23 players were in camp as of Tuesday afternoon, with only goalkeeper Maduka Okoye yet to arrive.

Those currently in camp include: Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare, Olakunle Olusegun, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, William Troost-Ekong, Benjamin Fredericks, and Chidozie Awaziem.

Others are Amas Obasogie, Stanley Nwabali, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Raphael Onyedika, Zaidu Sanusi, Frank Onyeka, Alhassan Yusuf, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Victor Osimhen.
