Iran on Friday strongly condemned what it described as “savage” Israeli attacks on Lebanon, after Israel struck several sites linked to the Tehran-backed Hezbollah movement.
In a statement, Iran’s foreign ministry called on “the United Nations, the international community, and regional countries to confront Israel’s warmongering,” while extending condolences for “the martyrdom of Lebanese citizens during the savage attacks.”
Israel said on Thursday that its forces had hit a series of Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, a stronghold of the group.
The strikes come despite a ceasefire agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon in November 2024, which was intended to end more than a year of hostilities. Israel has said, however, that it reserves the right to target Hezbollah positions it considers an ongoing threat.
According to the Israeli military, the latest operation aimed to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its arsenal following heavy losses last year, including the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
Lebanon’s health ministry said one person was killed in Thursday’s bombardments.
Tehran, a key backer of Hezbollah, was itself targeted in Israeli and U.S. strikes on nuclear sites during a 12-day conflict in June.
