The Kwara State Police Command, in collaboration with operatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), and local vigilante groups, has intercepted a vehicle transporting 127 bags of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, cleverly concealed beneath a load of yam tubers.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the operation marks another major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and criminal activity in the state.
The coordinated operation took place on September 26, 2025, around 4:00 p.m., along the Babanla–Oreke–Oke-Ode axis, a known transit route. The vehicle was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of the illicit cargo.

Two suspects—Dan-Teni Haruna and Rabiu Ibrahim, both from Saliku in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, were arrested at the scene for their alleged involvement in the drug smuggling operation.
In a related development, the joint security team also apprehended three other individuals: Mohammed Abubakar, Hussain (both from Tsaragi), and a notorious kidnap suspect, Tukur Ibrahim, believed to be linked to the August 8, 2025 invasion of Babanla.
Following ongoing investigations, the suspects will be formally charged and arraigned in court.
The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Adekimi Ojo, commended the security team for their effective collaboration and swift action. He reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to securing the state, warning that “Kwara will not be a safe haven for criminals.”
