Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has stated that he would cast his vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, should the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition coalition choose Peter Obi as its flagbearer.
Adeyanju made the comment on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, when asked whether he was attempting to discredit Obi.
“God forbid that I support the APC. If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote for Tinubu,” he declared.
Adeyanju and Obi’s longstanding feud recently escalated into a legal dispute, with Obi’s legal team threatening to sue the activist over alleged defamatory statements made on social media and in interviews. Adeyanju, however, dismissed the threat, expressing his readiness to face Obi in court.
The activist also criticized Obi for fostering what he described as an “unfriendly political culture,” pointing to the behaviour of some of the former governor’s “Obidient” supporters on social media.
“We cannot have a man who leads a mob that terrorizes people online and cannot tolerate criticism. Anyone who disagrees with him is seen as an enemy of Nigeria or has been paid to do so. That’s not democracy,” Adeyanju said.
He further questioned Obi’s democratic credentials, suggesting he has not made the same sacrifices for Nigeria’s democracy as others have.
“What sacrifices has Peter Obi made for democracy? Many of us have risked our lives at great personal cost. We need to cleanse our political system. We cannot have a country where online bullies set the tone of political discourse,” Adeyanju argued.
Reflecting on his voting history, Adeyanju emphasized his commitment to supporting what he considers credible candidates. “I’ve always stood by what I believe are credible candidates. In 1999, I voted for Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2011, I voted for Goodluck Jonathan. In 2015, I voted for Jonathan again, even against the so-called ‘lovers of democracy’ who wanted Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.
