President Bola Tinubu will on Thursday depart Nigeria for a two-nation official visit to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the President’s first destination will be Japan, where he is scheduled to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), taking place in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.

The conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” will focus on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation by improving business environments and institutions through innovation and private investment. It also aims to promote a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable African society grounded in human security, peace, and stability.

During his stay in Japan, President Tinubu will attend plenary sessions, hold bilateral meetings, and engage with top executives of Japanese companies with existing or potential investments in Nigeria.

TICAD, which began in 1993 as an initiative of the Japanese government, is co-organized by the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Union Commission, and the World Bank. The summit is held every three years, alternating between Japan and an African host country. The most recent edition was hosted by Tunisia in August 2022.

Following his engagements in Japan, President Tinubu will proceed to Brasília for a two-day state visit from Sunday, August 24 to Monday, August 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

While in Brazil, President Tinubu will hold a bilateral meeting with his host and participate in a business forum with Brazilian investors. The Nigerian delegation — comprising key ministers and senior government officials — is expected to explore new opportunities for bilateral cooperation, and sign agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening ties between both countries.
