Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly stormed the Green Legacy Hotel, located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State, arresting several youths suspected to be internet fraudsters.
The raid was said to have occurred in the early hours of Sunday during a pool party held at the hotel. According to The Telegraph, the operation was carried out by EFCC operatives from the Lagos Zonal Command.
This development comes just five days after operatives from the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the EFCC arrested a suspected internet fraudster in possession of two locally-made pistols during a separate raid at K-Hotel in Itori, Ewekoro area of Ogun State. That operation led to the arrest of 55 suspects.
A viral video from the Sunday raid at OOPL shows chaotic scenes as young individuals scrambled for safety amidst the sound of gunshots. Eyewitnesses reported that EFCC operatives seized over 20 luxury vehicles and other valuable items during the operation.
One user on social media platform X, identified as A. Ayomide, shared his account of the incident:
“Literally left my house past midnight to go to OOPL. Got there and the crowd was too much. I didn’t like the setting, and my guy didn’t like the setting, so we stayed at the car park. Left around 1:30am. Twenty minutes later, I got home and started getting calls that EFCC was raiding OOPL.”
The Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, Vitalis Ortese, confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details.
“Yes, they did. There was an incident this morning. We will find out and let you know,” he told The Telegraph.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC, Ayo Oyewole, said he was not aware of the operation but promised to follow up. Similarly, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said he would confirm and revert with further details.
