A medical light aircraft crashed into a residential area near Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, on Thursday, killing at least six people and seriously injuring two others, according to local authorities.

The plane, which departed from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport at 2:17 p.m. local time (1117 GMT), was en route to Somaliland when it went down in Ruiru, Kiambu County, shortly after 3:00 p.m. (1200 GMT).

“We have lost four people, including the pilot… it was all fatal,” said Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula, confirming that two additional fatalities occurred on the ground. Two others sustained serious injuries.

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined, and emergency services are continuing their response at the site.
