Suspended Kogi Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Insists on Senate Resumption July 22

The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has reaffirmed her intention to resume duties at the National Assembly on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, despite an appeal filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio challenging the court order that lifted her suspension.

Speaking during a training and empowerment programme in her constituency, Akpoti-Uduaghan stated that she had formally written to the Senate, notifying them of her planned resumption in line with the court’s ruling.

“I have about two months left before the six-month window expires. I’ve written to the Senate again, informing them that I will be resuming on the 22nd — Tuesday — by the special grace of God,” she said.

“The court made a decision. They argue it’s not an order, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a judicial decision and should be respected.”

Although the suspension did not deter her from engaging with her constituents, Akpoti-Uduaghan noted that it severely limited her legislative responsibilities, particularly her ability to sponsor bills and motions.

“Every senator has three major responsibilities: legislation — which includes drafting laws and reviewing treaties; oversight — monitoring ministries and agencies; and representation — which I’ve continued to carry out.

I’ve worked hard to ensure the needs of my community are reflected in the federal budget. Still, I miss the opportunity to contribute bills on the Senate floor.”

She emphasized that her role as a legislator cannot be fully performed without access to the Senate chamber and reiterated that her suspension, in light of the court’s judgment, is no longer valid.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended earlier this year, but a court recently ruled the decision unlawful. While Senate leadership has appealed the ruling, the lawmaker maintains that the judgment allows her to resume her legislative duties immediately.
