Liverpool have officially retired the No 20 shirt for Diogo Jota

It was the number he wore with pride, passion, and distinction, leading us to countless victories along the way. And now, Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club’s number 20.

Following close consultation with his wife, Rute, and his family, the club can confirm that Jota’s squad number will be officially retired across all levels, including the LFC Women and Academy teams. This is a gesture not just of remembrance, but of deep gratitude.

The decision recognises not only the immense contribution our Portuguese forward made to Liverpool’s on-field successes over the past five years, but also the profound personal impact he had on teammates, staff, and supporters. Diogo built lasting connections—and left a legacy far beyond the pitch.

“As a club, we were deeply moved by the sentiment expressed by our supporters—and we felt the same,” said Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football.

“It was essential that Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family were part of this process, and the first to hear of our intention.

“To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time in the history of Liverpool Football Club that such an honour has been granted. That alone speaks to the extraordinary impact Diogo had—not only as a footballer but as a human being.

“By retiring his number, we make it eternal. He wore the 20 shirt with honour, humility, and heart. He joined us in 2020, he won for us wearing 20—and he will forever be our number 20.”

The shock and grief of Diogo’s passing, alongside his brother André, continues to reverberate deeply across the club and wider football community.

Jota was more than a world-class footballer. He was a warm, kind, and generous person—beloved by those who knew him and admired by those who watched him play.

Liverpool FC continues to stand in solidarity with Rute, his three children, his parents, and all those who loved both Diogo and André.

Billy Hogan, John Henry, Tom Werner, and Mike Gordon added:

“The fact that in our club’s long and storied history this honour has never before been bestowed shows the extraordinary significance of Diogo to Liverpool Football Club.

“His legacy will live on—not just in our hearts and memories—but now permanently tied to the number 20.

“Our love and support remain with Rute, their children, and the entire family as they continue to navigate this unimaginable loss.”

Diogo Jota. Our lad from Portugal.

Forever our number 20.
