Investigators in India on Sunday recovered the second black box from the Air India Boeing 787 that crashed in the city of Ahmedabad, killing at least 279 people, authorities confirmed.
The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) was located two days after the crash, according to PK Mishra, a senior aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The flight data recorder (FDR) had already been recovered on Friday.
The London-bound jet went down shortly after takeoff on Thursday, slamming into a residential neighbourhood. Of the 242 passengers and crew on board, only one person survived. At least 38 residents were also killed in the crash.
“The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a detailed probe, while the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel investigation in line with international protocols, as the aircraft is American-made,” Mishra said in a statement.
Authorities confirmed that both the CVR and FDR have been secured and will be analysed as part of efforts to determine the cause of the disaster.
Experts have cautioned that it remains too early to establish the reasons for the crash.
