Peter Obi’s ally dumps LP over Anambra primary election

Peter Obi
Oseloka Obaze, a close ally of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has resigned his membership of the party, citing irregularities in its recent governorship primary election in Anambra State.

Obaze, a former United Nations diplomat and Secretary to the Anambra State Government under Obi, announced his resignation in a letter dated Sunday and addressed to the LP Chairman of Ochuche Ward 406 in Ogbaru Local Government Area.

In the letter, Obaze condemned the conduct of the April 5, 2025 LP governorship primary held in Awka, describing it as riddled with “outright irregularities bordering on fraud and criminality.”

“By virtue of this letter, I hereby tender my resignation from the Labour Party,” he wrote. “The processes, conduct, and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries… were not in tandem with either the party’s constitution and espoused core values or the true tenets of democracy. As such, I hereby disassociate myself henceforth from the Labour Party.”

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, Obaze confirmed the authenticity of the letter, saying “the letter is real and speaks for itself.”

He also pointed to the unresolved leadership crisis at the national level of the party, particularly the failure to reconcile the factions led by Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman, as further justification for his resignation.

Obaze’s political future remains unclear, as he did not disclose any immediate plans regarding a possible move to another party.

In 2022, Obaze resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shortly before Obi’s own departure, joining him in the Labour Party where he served as campaign manager during the 2023 presidential election and played a leading role in the Obedient Movement.
