A dramatic last-minute goal from Tawanda Chirewa denied Nigeria victory as Zimbabwe secured a 1-1 draw in their Group C World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
Victor Osimhen had given Nigeria the lead in the 73rd minute with a clinical header from Ola Aina’s precise cross. The Super Eagles appeared on course for all three points until Chirewa struck in the dying seconds, evading defenders and toe-poking the ball under goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom, the match saw Nigeria dominate possession and create several chances. Tolu Arokodare, who replaced Samuel Chukwueze in the 59th minute, played a key role in the opening goal, holding up the ball before passing to Aina, whose perfect cross found Osimhen at the far post.
Nigeria had multiple opportunities to extend their lead. In the 83rd minute, Wilfred Ndidi squandered a clear chance after being set up by Moses Simon, sending his shot wide. Moments later, Osimhen was substituted due to cramp, with Victor Boniface coming on in his place.
Zimbabwe came close to equalizing in the 76th minute when Walter Musona’s strike hit the underside of the crossbar after a defensive mix-up involving Nwabali.
The visitors finally found their equalizer in stoppage time, as Chirewa took advantage of a defensive lapse to score, securing a vital point for Zimbabwe.
Nigeria’s next fixture presents a crucial opportunity to regain momentum as they continue their World Cup qualifying campaign.
