The founder and Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has decided to drop all criminal charges against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other prominent traditional rulers.
Babalola, who made this announcement on Sunday, expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the Ooni and other traditional leaders in resolving the matter.
This development comes after Farotimi published a book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, in which he accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary.
Speaking to journalists, Aare Afe Babalola emphasized his respect for traditional authority, noting that the words of an Oba in Yoruba culture have always been regarded as commands. “I have no choice but to obey the directives of our traditional institutions,” he said.
Babalola reflected on his past actions, saying, “I turned down an oil block, supported the EFCC law, and rejected ministerial appointments twice. Why would anyone suddenly attempt to tarnish all I have worked for?”
He also clarified that he had no personal interest in Farotimi’s imprisonment, stating, “I gain nothing from his punishment; I am happy when I can give back.”
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who had earlier appealed to Babalola to consider the various figures who intervened in the situation, praised Babalola for his contributions to the Yoruba community, the nation, and the world.
“We all came together to discuss the matter with him, and he showed full respect to the Obas and agreed to the resolution,” the Ooni said. “We, as Obas, can testify to the hard work Aare Afe Babalola has put into building his name. His legacy cannot and will not be tarnished by anyone.”
The Ooni continued, “Dele Farotimi is also a son of the Yoruba people. As elders, when our children offend us, after giving them a little correction, we forgive them. This is our way.”
In a moment of reconciliation, both parties have agreed to move forward in the spirit of Yoruba tradition and respect for each other.
