PSC appoints Banji Lawal as new South West DIG

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of Banji Lawal, the Assistant Inspector General in charge of Border Patrol at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, as the new Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) representing the South West zone.

This announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations.

According to the statement, Lawal’s appointment follows the retirement of DIG Sylvester Alabi, who was overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), effective December 31, 2024.

PSC Chairman, Hashimu Argungu, congratulated Lawal on his promotion and urged him to contribute significantly to the Police Management Team.

On Friday, Lawal appeared before the Commission in a plenary session, attended by Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, and DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd), FDC.

During the session, Lawal underwent written and oral examinations, where he expressed strong support for the Nigeria Police Force’s Community Policing initiative, calling it a successful and impactful program.

Lawal brings a wealth of experience to his new role, with a distinguished career spanning various critical positions within the Nigeria Police Force. He has served as the former Commandant of the Police Training College in Ikeja, Lagos, Assistant Commissioner of Operations in Ekiti, Abia, and Edo States, Area Commander in Uyo, and Deputy Commissioner of Operations in Nasarawa and Akwa Ibom States.

Additionally, he has held senior roles such as Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration at the ICT Force Headquarters in Abuja, Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Registrar at the Central Criminal Registry (CCR) at Force Headquarters Annex, Ikoyi, DCP Finance and Administration in Benue State, Deputy Commandant of the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano, and CP General Investigation at the Force CID.
