Many feared dead in Abuja stampede

At least 10 people have been reported dead, with many others injured, following a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday morning.

This tragic event comes just days after a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s funfair claimed the lives of at least 35 children and left six others critically injured.

The stampede in Abuja occurred during a distribution of palliatives organized by the church to assist struggling residents. The event, which aimed to provide relief, attracted many people from Mpape, Gishiri Village, and surrounding areas.

As of the time of this report, attempts to contact Nkechi Isa, spokesperson for the FCT Emergency Management Department, for further details have been unsuccessful.

Eyewitnesses indicate that the incident occurred between 7 am and 8 am on Saturday when a large crowd surged forward in a rush to receive the aid.

Details later.
