NSIB commences probe into FlyBird aircraft incident

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into what it has described as a serious incident involving a FlyBird HS 125 aircraft, registered as 5NKAL.

Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

The aircraft, which was flying from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to Kotoka International Airport in Accra, experienced technical difficulties during its flight on December 6, 2024. Reports indicate that the aircraft lost both engines mid-flight and opted to return to Abuja.

Preliminary information reveals that the aircraft, carrying four people, was climbing from flight level 240 to flight level 280 when the crew reported an issue with engine number 2. At approximately 17:54 UTC, while about 25 nautical miles southwest of the VOR station VONUK, the crew requested to divert back to Abuja due to the engine problem.

NSIB’s findings show that the aircraft lost engine No. 2 at flight level 230. As the plane neared Abuja Airport, around 5,000 feet, the crew declared a Mayday, reporting the loss of engine No. 1. Despite the critical situation, the crew was able to land safely at 18:16 UTC.

In announcing the investigation, the NSIB stated: “Our Go Team is currently gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and reviewing the aircraft’s flight data and maintenance records to determine the underlying causes.

This investigation aims to prevent future incidents and improve aviation safety. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
