Patients rushed out as fire guts LAUTECH teaching hospital

A fire at the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Saturday morning caused significant damage to property, running into millions of naira.

The fire, which occurred around 5 am in a pediatric consultant’s office, destroyed electronic equipment, books, office furnishings, engines, and portions of the roof. A credible source suggested that the blaze may have been caused by an electrical spark.

In response, around 16 patients were swiftly evacuated from the affected ward. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

In a statement issued later that day, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ogunleye Omotayo, reassured the public that no lives were lost in the incident. He also confirmed that the fire had been extinguished without causing any major damage to the hospital’s operations.

“The management of the institution wishes to clarify that the fire incident, which occurred earlier this morning, was contained without significant damage to the hospital. No lives were lost, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing,” the statement read.

Omotayo added that power had been fully restored, and normal activities resumed in the affected area. He thanked hospital staff, the state Fire Service, and well-wishers for their prompt response and assured the public that there was no need for concern. He urged everyone to carry on with their normal routines without fear.
