Ladi Adebutu, the former governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, was released early Tuesday morning after being detained and questioned by the Department of State Services (DSS).
His media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, confirmed his release to Channels Tv early Tuesday morning. The news came after confirmation of his arrest by the PDP Publicity Secretary in Ogun, Kayode Adebayo, who had previously disclosed that Adebutu was detained by the DSS on Monday, following an invitation for questioning.
Adebutu, who was the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 Ogun State governorship race, was reportedly invited in connection with alleged disturbances during the local government elections held on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
A statement issued by the PDP on Monday, signed by Adebayo, initially confirmed the detention, noting that the specific charges against Adebutu were still unclear. “Our leader has indeed been detained by the DSS, and the charges remain unknown. However, we assure party members, supporters, and well-wishers that this challenge is temporary, and we must remain calm as this is part of the democratic process,” Adebayo said in the statement.
Adebayo also revealed that efforts to secure Adebutu’s release by 10 p.m. on Monday, either through personal recognition or a surety, had not been successful. “His lawyers have been informed, and they are set to take further action on Tuesday morning,” he added.
In light of the developments, the PDP spokesperson urged members and the general public to stay informed about Adebutu’s situation and to maintain peace until the matter is resolved.
