US pop star Britney Spears has reportedly checked herself into a rehabilitation facility following her arrest last month on suspicion of driving under the influence near Los Angeles, US media reported on Sunday.
The 44-year-old singer was arrested in early March by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and booked on suspicion of DUI. She was released shortly afterwards.
At the time, a representative for Spears described the incident as “completely inexcusable,” adding that she would “take the right steps and comply with the law,” according to entertainment outlet Deadline.
Multiple US media outlets reported on Sunday that Spears had voluntarily entered a treatment facility. It was not immediately clear when she checked in.
She is scheduled to appear in court on May 4 in connection with the DUI case, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Spears rose to global fame in the late 1990s with hits such as “…Baby One More Time” and went on to become one of pop music’s most recognisable figures, though she has largely stepped back from recording and performing in recent years.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears said she had never used hard drugs and did not have a drinking problem, though she acknowledged taking Adderall, a medication used to treat ADHD.
Following a widely publicised breakdown in 2007, Spears was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship controlled by her father, Jamie Spears, who managed both her finances and personal affairs while she continued performing.
The conservatorship ended in 2021 after years of legal battles and the global “Free Britney” movement that called for her release from the arrangement.
