Arsenal suffered a damaging setback in the Premier League title race on Saturday, falling to a 2-1 home defeat against Bournemouth and handing Manchester City renewed hope in the chase for the title.
The visitors struck first at a tense Emirates Stadium, with Junior Kroupi opening the scoring after capitalising on a deflection inside the box.
Arsenal responded in the 35th minute as Viktor Gyokeres converted from the penalty spot after a handball by Ryan Christie, bringing the hosts level before the break.
Despite making several attacking changes early in the second half, Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to break down Bournemouth’s well-organised defence.
The decisive moment came in the 74th minute when Alex Scott finished off a slick move, firing past David Raya to restore Bournemouth’s lead.
Arsenal pushed for an equaliser but were unable to find a way through, slipping to just their second home league defeat of the season.
Title race tightens
With six matches remaining, Arsenal remain top of the table and are chasing their first Premier League title since 2004. However, their lead over second-placed Manchester City stands at nine points—though City have games in hand.
Pep Guardiola’s side could close the gap significantly with a win over Chelsea and a potential victory in a crucial upcoming clash against Arsenal.
The defeat also marks Arsenal’s third consecutive domestic home loss in all competitions, raising fresh concerns about their ability to maintain momentum in the title run-in.
Bournemouth punish sluggish Arsenal
Bournemouth, managed by Andoni Iraola, took a deserved lead in the 17th minute when Kroupi tapped in from close range after the ball ricocheted off William Saliba.
Arsenal nearly responded immediately, but Kai Havertz headed over from a promising position as the home side struggled to find rhythm.
After Gyokeres’ equaliser, Arteta made bold attacking substitutions early in the second half, introducing Eberechi Eze, teenager Max Dowman, and Leandro Trossard.
However, the changes failed to spark a turnaround. Bournemouth’s winning goal came after David Brooks’ pass was redirected into the path of Scott, who finished confidently.
Arsenal’s response lacked cutting edge, managing just three shots on target, with Gyokeres firing wide in stoppage time.
Just weeks ago, Arsenal were chasing a potential quadruple, but defeats in domestic competitions have halted that momentum.
Despite still leading the table, the pressure is now firmly on as Manchester City look to capitalise in the final stretch of the season.
