The 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gawuna, a former deputy governor of Kano State, registered with his new party on Tuesday at his ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area, where he was issued a membership card.
The event drew prominent political figures, including former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, immediate past deputy governor Aminu Gwarzo, and ADC state chairman Musa Ungogo, alongside a large crowd of supporters.
Speaking after his registration, Gawuna thanked his supporters and party leaders, pledging to strengthen the ADC’s presence in Kano State.
His defection follows his recent resignation from the APC, which he described as a personal decision in a letter dated March 29, 2026, addressed to his ward chairman. In the letter, he expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve and contribute to its growth.
Gawuna had earlier stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, effective March 31, 2026, in compliance with a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring political appointees to resign in line with the Electoral Act.
He also thanked the president for the trust placed in him, noting that he had served in several capacities, including as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University Kano.
Gawuna’s move comes amid ongoing political realignments in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with key actors shifting alliances and recalibrating strategies.
Widely regarded as a significant boost for the ADC, his defection is expected to reshape the state’s political landscape, given his influence and performance in the 2023 governorship election, where he secured 890,705 votes.
