Benue govt declares one-week Easter holiday for public servants

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State
The Benue State Government has declared a one-week Easter holiday for public and civil servants across the state.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by Permanent Secretary (General Services) Godwin Tyolumun Tighil on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber.

The statement, titled “Declaration of Public Holiday to Mark Easter Celebration,” said workers will begin their holiday on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, and resume duties on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Governor Hyacinth Alia directed that public offices close by 1 p.m. on Tuesday to allow workers to commence the break.

Workers in essential services are, however, expected to remain on duty to manage urgent public welfare matters.

The governor also extended Easter greetings to residents, urging them to use the period for reflection and prayers for peace in Benue and across the country.

This marks the first time the governor has approved a full week-long Easter holiday, though a two-week break is traditionally granted during the Christmas period.

Easter, celebrated annually between March and April, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, symbolising victory over death and the promise of eternal life. Its date is determined by the lunar calendar, falling on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.
