Akpabio declares three Senate seats vacant

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday declared three senatorial seats vacant following the deaths of serving lawmakers.

The affected seats are from Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South-East senatorial districts.

Akpabio made the announcement during plenary, stating that the vacancies arose from the demise of the lawmakers in line with constitutional provisions.

“Following the unfortunate losses in the 10th Senate, vacancies have been created, necessitating the conduct of by-elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the affected seats,” he said.

The Senate President subsequently directed INEC to organise by-elections within the constitutionally stipulated timeframe.

“In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, INEC is mandated to conduct fresh elections to fill these vacant seats within the time specified by law, which is about 30 days from this declaration,” he added.
