Nigeria’s Samson Adamu becomes CAF acting general secretary

New CAF SG Samson Adamu
Nigeria’s Samson Adamu has been appointed caretaker General Secretary of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF).

CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced the appointment on Sunday during a press conference in Cairo following a meeting of the organisation’s executive committee.

Adamu succeeds Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who is stepping down after serving in the role since March 2021.

Mosengo-Omba, 66, had faced criticism for remaining in office beyond CAF’s mandatory retirement age of 63. He was also accused by some staff members of fostering a toxic work environment, although an internal investigation later cleared him of wrongdoing.

Reacting to the development, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) congratulated Adamu in a message posted on X: “Congratulations to our own Samson Adamu, who has been appointed Acting General Secretary of CAF.”

Adamu has served as CAF’s Director of Competitions since 2018, overseeing the organisation of major tournaments across the continent. He played a key role in the planning and execution of the Africa Cup of Nations and CAF inter-club competitions.
