We know terror financiers but won’t expose them – Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (retd.), on Friday said he should not be held responsible for the non-disclosure of individuals financing terrorism in Nigeria.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Buratai maintained that relevant government agencies are aware of those behind terror financing but have reasons for not making their identities public.

“You cannot hold me responsible for naming the financiers of terrorism,” he said.

“It is not just about mentioning names. The agencies concerned know why those names have not been released. What is important is that action is taken. These individuals are known and are still within society. I take responsibility only for matters strictly within the purview of the Nigerian Army.”

Buratai also clarified that the rehabilitation of repentant Boko Haram members was a government policy, not a military initiative.

“The initial concept was to give them a timeline to surrender in 2016. Those who did were granted safe passage and handed over to the appropriate agencies for rehabilitation,” he explained.

He further expressed concern over Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, stressing the need for stronger intelligence gathering to effectively combat threats.

Buratai also urged the government to recruit more security personnel to improve safety across the country.
