Tinubu to swear in Disu as IGP Wednesday

New acting Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu
President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the unanimous endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday.

The swearing-in will take place during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for the same day, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement.

The Nigeria Police Council meeting was held at the State House in Abuja and presided over by Tinubu. It was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.

Other top government officials present included Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Head of Service Esther Walson-Jack.

Governors back appointment

According to the Presidency, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s track record, particularly his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he earned commendation for strengthening crime control.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also described the appointment as merit-based, citing Disu’s distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force.

Wike commended Disu’s professionalism, recalling his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015. He further noted that Disu later served as Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, where he was credited with improving security operations across the territory.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing Disu’s appointment.

Career profile

Disu’s confirmation comes barely a week after Tinubu appointed him Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun last Tuesday.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, the 59-year-old officer joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

He holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship, credentials the Presidency says reflect his commitment to modern, knowledge-driven policing.

Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos.

Like his predecessor, Disu previously served under Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007. While Egbetokun was the Chief Security Officer, Disu served as Aide-de-Camp.
