The Ogun Magistrate’s Court 1 sitting in Sagamu, presided over by Olufunmilayo Somefun, has adjourned the case involving the driver of the Lexus SUV in which former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal crash.
The defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji, appeared before the court on charges bordering on dangerous driving causing death; reckless and negligent driving; driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property; and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
The matter was adjourned to March 17, 2026, the second adjournment since proceedings began to allow the Director of Public Prosecutions, who recently took over the case, adequate time to prepare for the commencement of trial.
In granting the application for adjournment, Magistrate Somefun ruled that counsel from the DPP’s office should be given sufficient time to properly ready the prosecution’s case before further hearing.
Mobolaji, 46, was arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrate’s Court on January 2 following the December 29, 2025 crash along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The accident claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami. The Lexus SUV reportedly collided with a stationary truck. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
The former world heavyweight champion was later discharged from hospital after doctors deemed him clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
Joshua subsequently visited a Lagos funeral home with his mother to pay his final respects as the bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were prepared for repatriation. He later travelled to the United Kingdom for their funeral rites.
The remains of both men were flown to the UK, where a funeral prayer service was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.
Ghami and Ayodele were widely regarded as key figures in Joshua’s camp, serving not only as members of his training team but also as close confidants. Their deaths sent shockwaves through the international boxing community.
