Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Sunday called for calm and national unity following reports that federal forces killed cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, popularly known as El Mencho.

Authorities said the security operation triggered roadblocks, flight disruptions, and scattered violence in parts of the country, prompting heightened monitoring across several states.

In a late-night statement addressing the evolving situation, Sheinbaum stressed coordination among federal and state security agencies and urged citizens to rely on official information.

“The Secretariat of National Defense reported on the operation carried out this morning by federal forces, which resulted in various blockades and other reactions,” she said.

She emphasised that security authorities were working closely across jurisdictions.

“There is absolute coordination with the governments of all states; we must remain informed and calm. The social media accounts of the Security Cabinet provide permanent updates,” she added.

Despite localized unrest, the president noted that normal activities were continuing across most of the country.

“In the vast majority of the national territory, activities are proceeding with complete normality,” she said.

Sheinbaum also commended Mexico’s security institutions for their efforts.

“My recognition to the Mexican Army, National Guard, Armed Forces, and Security Cabinet. We work every day for peace, security, justice, and the well-being of Mexico,” the statement concluded.

The president’s remarks came as authorities monitored developments following the reported death of El Mencho, the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), widely regarded as one of the most powerful drug trafficking organisations in the region.

According to reports, the operation sparked retaliatory unrest, including transportation disruptions, suspended sporting events such as matches in Mexico’s top professional football league and an international friendly, as well as flight cancellations at major airports in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.

The United States and Canada issued travel advisories urging citizens in affected areas to shelter in place amid roadblocks, ongoing security operations, and heightened criminal activity, underscoring the broader regional impact of cartel-related violence.
