Florida airport to be renamed after US president Donald Trump

An airport in Florida is set to be renamed in honor of US President Donald Trump, following the approval of a bill by the state legislature on Thursday.

The Republican-led legislature voted to rename Palm Beach International Airport as the “President Donald J. Trump International Airport”, according to state records. Governor Ron DeSantis, who previously opposed Trump, is expected to sign the measure into law.

Located just minutes from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, the airport renaming will also require approval from the Federal Aviation Administration before taking effect.

If approved, it would be the latest institution to carry Trump’s name. In December, the president’s handpicked board of the Kennedy Center in Washington, a memorial and arts complex dedicated to late President John F. Kennedy voted to rename itself the “Trump-Kennedy Center.”

Trump has also pursued efforts to rename New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles International Airport after himself, though those initiatives were blocked, according to US media reports.

Separately, the Treasury Department has confirmed that drafts have been prepared for a commemorative $1 coin featuring Trump’s image, despite laws prohibiting the depiction of a living or sitting president on currency.
