The House of Representatives erupted into a rowdy session on Tuesday as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which includes provisions for real-time electronic transmission of election results.
Francis Waive, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, moved the motion for the House to reverse its December 23 decision on the bill, aligning with the Senate’s position on electronic transmission of results.
When Speaker Tajudeen Abbas called for a voice vote, the “nays” were louder than the “ayes,” but he ruled in favor of the nays, sparking immediate protests from lawmakers. Members shouted in objection, forcing the Speaker to suspend proceedings and call for an executive session.
A lawmaker, speaking anonymously to The Telegraph, revealed that the executive session is also addressing the issue of unpaid contractors, with members reportedly insisting that the House would not reconvene until the payments are settled.
