Two people were killed and another injured in a late-night shooting at a student residence on the campus of South Carolina State University, authorities said, marking at least the third gun-related incident at the school since October.
The shooting was reported around 9:15 p.m. Thursday (0215 GMT Friday) at the Hugine Suites residential complex, the university said in a statement. The campus was immediately placed on lockdown.
University officials had not confirmed the identities of the victims or provided an update on the condition of the injured person as of early Friday.
The institution experienced two shootings in October, including one at the same student housing complex, according to US media reports. One person was killed and another wounded in those incidents.
Officials did not say whether any suspects were in custody but announced that Friday classes were cancelled. Local law enforcement agencies were assisting with patrols on and around the campus.
The university, a historically Black institution located in Orangeburg, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) south of Columbia, enrolls roughly 3,000 students.
The latest violence comes amid persistent gun violence across the United States, where firearms are widely accessible and shootings claim thousands of lives each year.
Just days earlier, an 18-year-old gunman killed eight people at a secondary school and a residence in British Columbia, Canada — a rare mass shooting in the country.
In December, a gunman opened fire inside a classroom at Brown University in Rhode Island, killing two people and wounding nine others.
According to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive, more than 1,000 gun deaths were recorded in the United States in the first month of 2026 alone. As of February 2, the country had experienced 28 mass shootings, defined by the group as incidents in which at least four people are killed or wounded.
