Vampire-period horror film Sinners has shattered the all-time Oscars record with 16 nominations, the Academy announced Thursday.

The blues-infused drama, set in the segregated American South and directed by Ryan Coogler, earned nods in nearly every major category, including Best Picture.

Written, produced, and directed by Coogler, the 2025 supernatural horror film stars Michael B. Jordan and is set in the Mississippi Delta. It weaves together themes of Black American history, music, and the supernatural.

With its record-breaking 16 nominations, Sinners surpassed the previous high of 14, jointly held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.

The film garnered a Best Actor nomination for Michael B. Jordan, who portrays twins contending with both supernatural forces and entrenched racism. It also received nods spanning screenplay, score, and—significantly—Best Casting, the first new category added to the Academy Awards in over two decades.

Coming in second was One Battle After Another with 13 nominations, including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Both top films were produced by Warner Bros., which is currently at the center of a high-profile bidding war between Netflix and Paramount.

Other notable nominees include Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value, each with nine nominations, while Hamnet earned eight.
